Milkweed is a common, herbaceous perennial native to Florida, and can be found in the Coastal Plain from eastern Texas to southern South Carolina. Asclepias is the only family of plants that serves as the host plant for monarch butterfly egg laying. The monarch larvae, the hatchling caterpillars, feed exclusively on milkweed leaves. Milkweed is a quick-growing plant that can reach between two and four feet high. Milkweed spreads rapidly when established by self-seeding pods and flowers into bright white, purple, pink, orange, or yellow flowers (depending on variety) during the spring and summer .
